AI Pioneers Win $1.06 Million, 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics

Two North America-based teachers used physics to assist pioneer advances in AI — and now they’re being rewarded for his or her contributions with the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on Tuesday that Princeton emeritus professor John Hopfield and College of Toronto professor Geoffrey E. Hinton have been the newest Physics Nobel Prize winners. Hopfield was honored for inventing the Hopfield Neural Network, a system that shops and recreates patterns in knowledge, in 1982.

Hinton, who has been referred to as “The Godfather of AI,” used the Hopfield community as the premise for a community of his personal, the Boltzmann machine, which he co-invented in 1985. The machine can determine properties in knowledge and be used for duties like discovering hidden options in knowledge.

“The Boltzmann machine can be utilized to categorise pictures or create new examples of the kind of sample on which it was skilled,” the Nobel Prize committee stated in a post on X. “Hinton has constructed upon this work, serving to provoke the present explosive improvement of machine studying.”

The prizewinners share a reward totaling 11 million Swedish kroner or $1.06 million U.S. {dollars}.

Hinton, who’s 76 years previous, shared that he was “in an affordable lodge in California” when he heard the information.

Hopfield, who’s 91, was based mostly in a cottage in England when he came upon.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Drugs was awarded Monday to UMass Chan Medical Faculty professor Victor Ambros and Harvard Medical Faculty professor Gary Ruvkun for his or her discovery of microRNA, which is essential for gene regulation.
